Video Episode #17

Video Episode #17

Episode #17 of my series “How to Improve your Social Media Videos” for the 30 Videos in 30 Days challenge on Facebook is available. Steve reviews¬†hard wired¬†lapel microphone options for the Zi8 or other video cameras with an audio input jack. Please note that the cameras have a 3.5mm (1/8″) stereo input jack for the microphone feed. Most microphone output are mono and require either an adapter or the right kind to cable to split the mono signal into a stereo signal to the camera. Without the correct connection, your audio will proabably only appear on the left channel in your video and you will need to fix this in your video editing software. It’s easier to make the correct connection when recording.

This hard wired microphone has a long 20′ cable for lots of flexibility when recording. Bundle the cord when recording close the camera, or use that 20′ when you need some distance from the camera. Try a cheap cell phone holder with a belt clip to stuff the bundled cord into when you don’t need the full length. Don’t forget to purchase extra batteries – you’ll probably forget to turn the microphone off a few times (like I did) and you’ll need batteries handy for that.
