Video Episode #16

Video Episode #16

Episode #16 of my series “How to Improve your Social Media Videos” for the 30 Videos in 30 Days challenge on Facebook is available. Steve reviews a wireless lapel microphone option for the Zi8 or other video cameras with an audio input jack. Please note that the cameras have a 3.5mm (1/8″) stereo input jack for the microphone feed. Most microphone output are mono and require either an adapter or the right kind to cable to split the mono signal into a stereo signal to the camera. Without the correct connection, your audio will proabably only appear on the left channel in your video and you will need to fix this in your video editing software. It’s easier to make the correct connection when recording. See the product list below for suggested cables to use with the Radio Shack wireless microphone kit.

Radio Shack Wireless Lapel Microphone System
Note: I recommend the following cables (same cable, different lengths) to connect this system to your Zi8 or other video camera 3.5 mm (1/8″) stereo mic input jack:

Hosatech Mono Interconnect 3.5 mm TRS to 1/4″ TS, 5 foot

Hosatech Mono Interconnect 3.5 mm TRS to 1/4″ TS, 10 foot

If you want more portability in a wireless system and are willing to budget more money towards your audio production, here is a wireless transmitter and receiver option that does not need household power to the receiver. Both the transmitter and receiver are battery operated. Note, you’ll need the optional adapter listed to get stereo sound to your video camera.
Audio Technica Pro 88W – Camera Mountable VHF Lavalier System

Another wireless system option (with handheld microphone and lavalier microphone):
Azden WMS-Pro System
$145.00 (cheaper price than Amazon on BHPhotoVideo)

3.5 mm Stereo Male to 3.5 mm Mono Female Adapter
